There is a lot going on at South Side! Many different parents and staff volunteer throughout the year, and we can always use more help. If you are interested in helping with any of the below listed committees, please contact the PTA president and she will get you contact information for the committee chair or click here to sign-up for one of the committees.
The Scholastic Book Fairs are held during the weeks of Parent-Teacher conferences in the fall and the spring. All proceeds from the book fairs go towards buying materials for our school library. We receive far more value if we take library materials (in exchange for book sales) rather than cash.
Your committee will organize delivery and pick-up schedules with the Scholastic Book Company; work with the librarian and teachers for ideas and set-up; organize sales schedule and volunteers to help; oversee distribution, backorders; etc…
This has proved to be a valuable annual fundraiser.
Your committee will provide reminders for students to bring in BoxTops; collect, trim, and count BoxTops monthly; organize incentives for students to bring in BoxTops; etc…

FINE ARTS & ENRICHMENT
This active committee enhances the arts and enrichment programs at South Side by organizing a variety of events pertaining to theater, music, dance, and the visual arts. The committee offers suggestions for special programs; organizes these events; assists the music and art teachers; advocates for arts programming and recruits parent/guardian volunteers; etc…
Although we would like this event to serve as a fundraiser, we have realized that even when it doesn’t bring in a profit, it is an important event—a favorite activity for many South Side students, and a great draw for families. This committee decides upon the many activities; recruits and schedules volunteers; arranges tickets, prizes, and snacks; etc…
An international foods potluck and celebration of cultures. The committee organizes activities; recruits volunteers; promotes the event; etc…
South Side’s grounds have been greatly enhanced by the efforts of the Landscape Committee. This committee makes recommendations for school ground improvements, as well as organizes fall and spring landscape days—recruiting parent/guardian volunteers to help plant, weed, prune, lay down slate, etc…
This committee assists the librarian & teachers in supporting and promoting reading throughout South Side.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION LIAISON
This is a new position (or committee, should we decide that a committee is needed). We thought that just as South Side’s arts teachers have the Fine Arts and Enrichment Committee for support and as a liaison to the PTA, we should also have a liaison for the P.E. teacher and program. This position would include helping to be sure all needs are met and volunteers are recruited for the annual spring Field Day.
PTA BY-LAWS REVIEW
Update PTA By-Laws and have them properly approved.
For the first day of the school year that all classes attend, as well as the last school day of the year, this committee will arrange to have coffee and bagels or some other food available for all parents/guardians/staff.
This annual event celebrates books, stories, and story-telling. The committee will work with the PTA at large in order to promote this event and hopefully draw a sizeable portion of South Side families. The committee will arrange reading-related activities, story-tellers, and so on, as well as recruit parent/guardian and teacher/staff volunteers.
Reflections offers an opportunity for South Side students to display their creativity. This committee will promote this opportunity and recruit student arts submissions for the Illinois PTA Reflections program.
Each South Side teacher selects two parent/guardian volunteers. These volunteers can help the teacher in a variety of ways—helping with classroom activities; recruiting other parents/volunteers for class events; helping to collect small donations for the classroom; etc…
This popular event provides an opportunity for students to have fun exploring something science or technology-related and to display their projects in an evening poster session. This committee helps promote the event, encourage student (and family) participation; ensure that students have poster-boards; etc…
The Teacher/Staff Appreciation committee works throughout the year to show our appreciation to the South Side staff. Past activities have included monthly acknowledgements of the staff, welcoming of new staff, appreciation meals, gifts, birthday celebrations, and National PTA Teacher Appreciation Week.
This committee oversees our South Side PTA website.
T-SHIRTS/SOUTH SIDE GEAR
A fundraising and South Side “spirit-building” committee, which sells South Side gear at whatever events are deemed optimal.
TURN OFF SCREENS WEEK
Promote Turn Off Screens Week; disseminate information regarding the importance of it; organize activities during the week; etc… Traditionally we have done this for the spring Turn Off Screens Week, but we might consider doing it for both spring and fall, if there is enough interest.
Primary Southside PTA fundraiser of the year. Raise funds for Southside PTA via Walk-a-thon event. Organize and implement school-wide event, collect funds, etc…

Organize the gathering of Yearbook pictures and information, as well as the publication, sales, and dissemination of the Yearbook.
